For many of us, the first time we discover nervous system regulation it can feel like a revelation, a way to calm the storm inside, to quiet the racing thoughts in our mind and to bring a sense of control to the waves of anxiety or overwhelm that seem to take over at the most inconvenient times. Whilst nervous system regulation is a profound tool for healing, it is often misunderstood. You see many of us try to use nervous system regulation as a way to not feel our emotions, to push them down further in order not to feel discomfort, anxiety or grief. We don’t want to sit with the parts of our shadow self that ache, that hold our old wounds, that feel confusing or overwhelming or sad, so it makes sense that we would reach for regulation tools with the hope that they will take away what feels like too much.
The more we resist our emotions, the more they stay stubbornly lodged within us, trapped and manifesting in both our thinking mind and the physical body. Deeply held emotions which have not been processed, are often the root cause of dis-ease, how many times have you felt anxious and noticed that your digestive problems flare up or that shoulder pain starts up again - without an outlet that energy has nowhere to go. By suppressing, judging and rejecting our emotions creates internal stress and tension, when we tell ourselves we shouldn't feel something, or override our real and natural reactions to life our nervous system is stuck in overload. Stored emotions hold us back in life, have you ever seen how an animal in the wild releases the chemical build ups from strong emotions after a traumatic event, they shake it off and then sleep.
As a fully certified EPNSR Practitioner I am trained to support you on your journey into your inner world. We will look to uncover how your emotional responses are serving you, do you feel safe in your emotions, or are they unpredictable, out of proportion to the situation, and impacting your relationships or state of health?
By using a variety of tools and techniques we look at ways to:
better understand your emotions
attend to emotions rather than be controlled by them
restore, regulate and build resiliency in the autonomic nervous system
support mental and physical wellbeing
effectively acknowledge, name, locate, process, and release emotions, along with any residual emotional energy and the outdated mental and somatic stories that influence them.
use gentle hands-on somatic bodywork and energy techniques alongside guided breath work to gently release trapped emotions in order to facilitate deep healing
At the point of the initial enquiry I will invite you to a 10 minute call (free and no obligation to book) as this gives me an idea of your situation and goals, and for you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Upon booking I will email a client consultation form and ask that this is completed and returned a couple of days before your appointment. The session is a combination of looking at your emotions, where you are in your nervous system, where you hold your emotions etc so that we can put a plan in place so that you can build your own ‘toolbox’. You will also experience somatic release bodywork techniques which will take place on my cosy therapy couch.
It is important to note that I am a trained emotional processing and nervous system regulation practitioner (EPNSR). Whilst I am qualified to work within the specific areas of trauma, please note that acute trauma, severe trauma, PTSD, recent and deep grief, sexual abuse, addictions, domestic violence and other complex traumatic wounds would need to be supported from a trauma informed therapist. If, after the initial inquiry, I feel that I am not the right therapist to support you, or deep seated challengingly trauma comes up during a session, I will speak to you at the time to ensure you are sign posted to a to a practitioner who can better support your needs.
