A health assessment is a set of checks that give you an overview of your current health. You might choose to have a health assessment because of a specific health concern, or you’d like support to improve your health. The great thing about health assessments is that it gives you a valuable insight to where any improvements could be made to prevent health problems and to promote health longevity.  There is also the opportunity to discuss any health concerns you may have to see how Nutritional Therapy could help you.  

As a Registered Nutritionist I am able to guide you and work with you as part of a health and wellbeing plan, and support you along the way.

I believe nutrition is the foundation for health longevity.  In 2013 I was diagnosed with a debilitating condition called Candida, through being over-prescribed antibiotics.  Candida is an auto-immune reactive condition which causes a huge range of symptoms each one is problematic and this huge effect on my life.  After countless appointments with my GP and no answers, or support, I turned to nutrition to heal myself from the inside.   By using food as medicine, through nutrition, and supporting this process with reflexology and massage it took 9 months to regain my health, this experience had a profound impact on my life and lead to me taking a new career path by opening The Natural Therapy Centre.  

We have a delicate ecosystem within our body, this intricate system is inhabited by micro-organisms that play an important role in keeping us fit, healthy and strong.  These friendly creatures are known as lactic bacteria and live in the digestive tract, they strengthen our immune system and help our body fight off 'unfriendly' bacteria and pathogens which cause disease and inflammation.  When we are healthy the friendly bacteria outnumber the unfriendly, keeping our inner eco-system in harmony, however many factors weaken our immunity and upset this delicate balance such as fast food, yoyo diets, stress, the use of medicines, hormones, trauma and anti-bio-tics, heavy metals and dental work.  Unfortunately, when the body is in this weakened state the unfriendly bacteria can multiply potentially causing problems such as headaches, nausea, skin disorders, acid reflux, IBS, anti-inflammatory responses and potentially more serious conditions.

​My approach to nutritional therapy and wellness encompasses the whole you, by shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a functional medicine and patient-centered approach.  I spend time listening to my client's health history and looking at the interactions amongst genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors which can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease.  We try to get the 'root cause' of what has led to, or triggered, the symptoms which you are experiencing, and work to reduce body toxicity, re-establish a healthy internal ecosystem, calm down inflammation and support you on your journey to health longevity.  

Natural tonic herbs,  health supplements and food sensitivity testing may also be recommended.

Common Health Complaints

​ Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is often a label assigned by the medical profession when they are presented with digestive symptoms with no known cause. Patients are understandably frustrated when they seek medical help and don't feel listened to or receive no guidance on how to address this painful condition.  IBS is a blanket term for a wide range of symptoms that affect the entire digestive system.

Sufferers routinely present with chronic, relapsing gastrointestinal problems characterised by abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habit, alternating from constipation to diarrhea, nausea, acid reflux, heartburn or a sensation of fullness soon after eating. An accumulation of food in the gastrointestinal tract may explain these symptoms.

Acid Reflux or GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) is when the acid travels from the gut back up into the throat causing pain and a burning sensation.  These  symptoms are usually treated with long term acid suppressors, working with a nutritionist we look at calming down the gut by reducing toxic load, when the gut is acidic the gasses cause the upper oesophagus sphincter to open allowing the acid to come back up, this can often be worse at night.  IBS and Acid Reflux are one of the most common digestive complaints and this continues to grow.

Many people today struggle with a range of intolerance from lactose, diary, wheat, yeast and gluten to name a few.  When the body is unable to break down these foods people often suffer with many unpleasant symptoms as the body reacts to the offending foods believing they are pathogens.  As the immune system reacts to these foods  inflammatory markers are released as a protection mechanism.  To calm your gut and live a better life get in touch today.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

During the first nutritional consultation you can expect an analysis and further exploration of the previously completed health questionnaire, which includes diet, lifestyle and current and past health issues. A follow-up appointment is included in the initial price, after approximately 2 weeks, and is an opportunity for you to discuss your progress, achievements and any areas of concern, further recommendations can be made at this stage.  Email support between these appointments is provided.

I’ll work with you and recommend achievable dietary and lifestyle changes which you can put into practice, helping to alleviate your symptoms and restore optimum health.

How Often?

Everyone’s needs are different. It is usual to book a follow up appointment after 4 to 6 weeks as this gives time for changes to be implemented and any tweaks to be made.  Depending on your health goals it may not be necessary for a further appointment or we made decide to book further appointments 6 weeks apart as some health conditions are not a quick fix and require patience to time to heal.

It is essential that you provide me with your completed Health Questionnaire at least 3 days prior to your appointment.

Additional Testing

Occasionally specific nutritional tests may be recommended such as a mineral analysis, food intolerance, thyroid checker or adrenal stress testing. These are at an additional cost.

This service utilises state of the art immunoassay microarray technology to detect food-specific IgG antibodies to 60 different foods including wheat, yeast, soya, eggs, gluten and dairy.

The test is carried out in my mini lab in Colne and your results will be available is just 24 hours.
